Cabaser
If you have problems with your current meds for treating Parkinson’s disease, your doctor may recommend a prescription for Cabaser to be taken by itself or with Levodopa, another Parkinson’s drug that can begin to lose its effectiveness after a time.
The active ingredient in Cabaser is Cabergoline, a potent dopamine agonist. Dopamine is a brain chemical (neurotransmitter) that sends messages between nerves, allowing for normal functions of your body. The symptoms of tremor, stiffness, and slow movements are believed to be a result of decreased dopamine levels.
How Does This Work?
When taken as directed, Cabaser will work to attach to the dopamine receptors in your brain. This action will stimulate the production of dopamine in its major pathways and raise the amount of dopamine activity in your brain which helps to reduce your symptoms. You are more stable, less shaky, and able to continue with your daily tasks. There is no cure for Parkinson’s disease, but taking Cabaser as part of your treatment provides you with relief from the symptoms.
Conditions Treated
The cause of Parkinson’s disease is still relatively unknown, but both genetics and environmental factors appear to be involved. The symptoms evolve slowly and progress for some years. The declining motor symptoms of PD are a result of cells in the midbrain dying so dopamine in the region is reduced. The cell death is believed to be from an abnormal build-up of protein deposits (called Lewy bodies) in the neurons.
Drug therapy for symptoms of PD usually always involves Levodopa with or without Carbidopa. Levodopa is converted into dopamine in your brain, while Carbidopa assists with stopping this conversion before Levodopa reaches its target. After a time, you may notice that some symptoms are returning or increasing. This is referred to as “off” time. It will help you regain “on” time as it reduces symptoms.
Before Cabaser is Prescribed to You
Discuss other medical issues with your doctor and list any OTC or Rx meds you currently take or use, including herbal remedies and vitamin supplements. This will help your doctor to determine if Cabaser is the right medication for you. Keep all doctor and lab appointments so your progress can be monitored and to watch for indications of any adverse effects of Cabaser.
Precautions
Until you know how Cabaser will affect you, do not attempt any task that requires you to be alert. Do not change dosages of any meds you take without discussing it with your doctor first as this could increase the risk of side effects. All drugs should be kept stored safely out of children’s reach and should never be shared with anyone else.
